Having grown up in the DC area, I'd say the pump jockey's bang on the money. The people with the "alphabet... and count" fetish neglect the highways, the "state" streets (all of 'em diagonal), and the danger that is Georgetown - one wrong move and you wind up, in the words of an old friend who experienced the phenomenon on a semi regular basis, "sucked into Virginia".

By the by, thanks a bunch for reposting the strip! Pretty much every moment of break, lunch, and not-doing-anything-else today has been spent Brunoing. :) I don't much agree with her religious or political views (and so by extension I guess, with yours :) ) but I've always consdiered her one of the most interesting, and fully developed, comic characters I've ever run across. You did a bang up job.

I've lived on the outskirts of DC most of my life. I still get lost.

But the worst part is all of the people who say, "How can you get lost? It's a grid! All you have to know is the alphabet and how to count!"

The one way streets and roundabouts and special routings make it like some kind of ancient curse: You can SEE the building you want to get to; you can "orbit" closer and closer; but you can never actually GET there!
