Dan's wanting attachments he won't allow himself to even *try* making work. It's a masochistic desire to show the worst of himself to Bruno before any potential "best" can come out. But Dan ought to know (after this much avoidance) that it's ultimately self-defeating to show the worst of yourself *first* to a potential lover. He's being very honest with Bruno, true, but that honesty could easily make for a self-fullfilling prophecy that means Dan has no reason to grow beyond his fears or self-sabotage.
