If you're not doing it for yourself, it isn't worth doing. Either it will make others feel something, or it won't. If it made *you* feel while doing it, maybe that's all it will ever be.

Ouch, Edward! But thanks for clarifying why my own writing has never seen the light of public scrutiny, and probably never will.

The trouble with "as long as you want" or any variant on "as long as it works for you" is that anyone truly creative cares about whether what they're doing is of value to some target audience. They may be selective about who values their work (indeed, a vastly lucrative or "popular" creativity can be deeply dissatisfying if the work is only of value to an audience whose opinion the creator doesn't truly value), but any true creator has a target audience and cares whether that audience values the work created. Without that, what separates creativity from public masturbation ?

I thought the answer was obvious: As long as you want. As long as it made sense to you. As long as you could keep making it make sense. As long as the characters did not rebel and start their own journey toward their own destinies. This is not a new quandary.
