You could make the argument that the sentiment has never really died since then. Even though for every American dead in the September 11 attacks, some 60,000 Middle-Easterners of various faiths and complexions have been killed in retaliation. The thirst for blood vengeance seems endless. Many eyes for an eye. Many teeth for a tooth. Those were the days when ethnic hatred became acceptably patriotic again.
