These days I might say, “Oh, mixed” or maybe “Some good, some bad. You know… life.” Or even just “Tired.” Reasonably honest, but short and sweet. ‘Cause yeah, most people don’t actually care, they are just following social conventions.

I say “average”, or in spanish: “promedio”. If questioned I’ll ad that i do vary plus or minus one standard deviation of the mean. It’s usually the most honest description, statistically speaking.
