Fueling the lawn mower, starting the barbeque, i loved the smell of gasoline, the heady odor of the refinery and the magic of transportation, the way the fumes made everything beyond them wavy. My father admitted he liked it, too. That was years before I learned that kids in remote villages, especially on the rez, would go around with a trash bag with maybe a quart of gas in it, huffing the fumes. Quite a lot of brain damage was and still is being done that way. Since then, I don't tell people I like the smell of gas any more. Gasoline.
