Welcome to my world, Pete. Only I never left the country except for my surreal experience in the service, which was very "Catch-22". Just a stranger in a strange land all my life. I think that's why I relate to Bruno so well.

Actually, there's a real danger of permanent anomié if you spend too much time outside the US or your home country. You come back and suddenly the things you took for granted your whole life don't just fit in any more. Why DO police cars look like criminals own them? Why AREN'T there more roundabouts, and why can't people figure them out? Why INTERRUPT sports events on TV with ads? Why CAN"T adults talk to kids without being condescending all the time? You eventually find you can never go home. Even home isn't home any more. Where do you go then?

Hmmm, maybe it's just me, but I feel like I've been traveling my whole life, even when I've lived in the same house for years. A sense of rootlessness, disassociation with any particular place, a constant vagabond through life.
