I've found that the really terrible jobs (helping management delay payments to vendors, for example) had very good people in them, caught between the need for a paycheck and their sense of dignity. They would be sweet and helpful should someone find a way out. Conversely, the worst place I ever left was staffed with soulless automatons who knew promotion was only two years and a personal betrayal away. Other than what was on the tube the night before, they had no interests or hobbies or even friends outside of work. To which they were devoted as a hyena is devoted to a half-chewed carcass. With much the same appetite and unconcern for the esthetics. I found every one of them creepy, not to say monstrous. Soon enough they detected I was not like them, and the gnawing began. If they tripled my pay -- and it was not inconsiderable -- I would not go back. Could not go back. The sole consolation was that no one was sorry at the parting. I should feel good, but I used to fix dysfunctional workplaces like this. Not possible here. No place to begin improvement; they liked their nasty, brutal jobs as they were.

I should feel good that they went bankrupt a couple of years later, but believe me, the thought of that zombie workforce loosed upon an unsuspecting America still gives me chills at night. Worse than any race from "Spacetrawler." And all still outwardly human.

My worst jobs were mainly about terrible bosses, totally clueless bosses running a close second. But also, I really enjoyed quitting jobs. (This was a long time ago, when finding work wasn't such a desperate thing...)

I think this is part of the reason why I've stuck around in jobs long term; I end up working with/under good people and I hate screwing people over
