I’m not sure how a culture which (another example) evidently invented the concept of eating food off of a nude woman qualifies as either squeamish or having-strong-separation-of-fantasy-&-reality — literally treating a woman like a piece of furniture? in real life? — but I wasn’t trying to start anything serious anyway. I remembered the part about strippers and my store of knowledge (such as it is) moved forward.

(I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that serving (no pun intended) the function of a dinner table — nyotaimori (I looked the word up just now) — pays well but that’s not really the point…)

Some time ago, while searching for material related to super-heroes, I found out there’s an entire genre of Japanese DVDs which depicts super-heroines being repeatedly beaten or killed in horrible ways. They still keep the “blur” effect over the genitals, though. Being on a Japanese film content review board must be quite a trip…

And that’s probably enough of this, anyway.

Not to confound the waters here more than they are, but… it was General Douglas MacArthur, commander of the occupation forces in Japan, who had the Japanese constitution specifically prohibit the display of ANY female genital hair. A peculiar phobia direct from his crippled Victorian upbringing, enshrined as law — which has become famous for being elaborately evaded. Not all this peculiarness and queamishness is Japanese, you should know.

Ronald, about the videos… Japan has a stronger societal awareness of the difference between fantasy and reality, no matter how disturbing/weird/illegal the fantasies may be to someone else observing. I worry that in “the west” we’re at risk of losing that concept altogether because of worry over “obscenity”, “offense” or irrational fear that a fantasy depiction could “make” a person more likely to do something criminal.

On another note, Bruno’s lucky she’s not in Japan. According the Joan Sinclair’s book “Pink Box: Inside Japan’s Sex Clubs” (which I bought under the presumption that it consisted of history and personal accounts and so on but which is in fact about four-fifths photographs (most of which were, I suppose, taken “inside Japan’s sex clubs,” so I guess the unwary buyer has no real room to complain)):

“Most strip clubs feature special acts in which gentlemen can inspect a dancer’s female anatomy with a flashlight or magnifying glass. They may also drink sake off her [gen____ia]* or take a Polaroid picture. Most clubs also have private rooms for the ultimate audience participation.”

Uh, yeah, well, anyway…

Also (not really related), in Japanese “video” stores (video tapes are long gone, of course, but the name remains), pornographic DVDs are kept right out in the open with the other DVDs. So a Japanese woman is browsing through the DVDs and she notices about a dozen rather enthusiastic-sounding guys congregated in the “bondage/torture/rape” section…who might look up and see HER at any moment. I’d think that Japanese “video” stores don’t get much repeat business from women. I don’t know for sure, of course.

Well, of course people “wanted her for nothing but her body.” That’s all that she was SHOWING them. That’s all their attraction to her could be based on.
