The first appearance of a major character (outside of family & cat). And I think it sums up their relationship well. They’re good friends and enjoy needling each other a bit. Lenny is often exasperated by her, but highly values her friendship and character.
They are sitting in what used to be Clasé Café, which I think is now Bruegers Bagels, with the post office (and Salvation Army sign) across the street. Jess Potts used to laugh at me because for years I called it Classy Café rather than “class-say” Café.
Recently, Beth said almost the same thing to me that Bruno is saying. I pulled out this strip and showed it to her.
School is jumping through hoops, but so are jobs, so it is doing a fine go of preparing you, don’t worry.
This strip is based on an actual experience in the beginning of my freshman year at college. I was walking alone, and was whistling Weird Al Yankovic’s “Buckingham Blues.” This guy was maybe 20 feet in front of me. He dropped his bag on the sidewalk, turned around, rushed to me, and started shoving me against my chest.
Anyhow, I was not as bold as Lenny or Bruno, and explained that I was simply whistling a song. Of course, I had never met (or realized I’d met) anyone gay at that point, and so i was mostly just flustered and confused. I wonder how I would have reacted a couple years later… Hm. Hopefully a bit better.
This storyline came about because the summer after dropping out of UMass, I house sat in New Orleans, a mix of wanting to be close to my brother who was living there at the time, and not knowing what to do next with my life.
Lenny’s Mug reads, “Jove’s Drink.”
I spent a lot of that summer (while house-sitting) sitting around at the writing desk, shirtless, trying to write.
Oh, and I actually went out and bought a postcard and stamp for reference. :)
Lenny quickly became Bruno’s home away from home. The place she crashes at or visits when she is traveling or between places. Lenny, bless ‘im, is very accepting of her.
Part two of “Lawrence of Arabia” mayyyy be more interesting politically and about character, but part one is the one which gets the adrenaline going. It totally made me want to storm some castles. And to try to express that in a strip.
I had her work at the Moody Cow Convenience store because it was also the name I wanted to publish under. I later dropped it for the more innocuous and less interesting Good Port Publishing.
I think it was a somewhat parody of one of the old milk carton logos from Dairy Mart, which i can’t seem to find at the moment.
I think they’re standing on Boltwood Walk.
