In the beginning, I didn’t know which characters would stick. In this first appearance of Susan, I wrote her as a bit of a simpleton. But I think it was her good natured earnestness which led me to have her stick around. She came to be one of my favorite characters.
And just so you know, I actually did drop out of UMass after two years. For better or for worse.
I think this background was actually  referenced from the admission offices of UMass, and that heart card was because this strip appeared shortly before Valentines day.
Back when I was attending UMass, a Christian group paid for a many-page full-color “anti-abortion” insert to be included with the school newspaper. I’m pro-choice, and decided to run a counter-opinion week in my strip, and so I researched details, and here it is.
I think the newspaper received so much criticism for running the “anti” insert (they stated flatly that they needed money, and didn’t take sides), that they were happy to print a my comic as a counter-opinion.
Of course I had to start an uncomfortable topic with an uncomfortable aspect of it, that many people feel a man should be part of the choice — and clearly Bruno does not.
This week also cemented in Susan as a good friend of Bruno.
For the sake of my sanity and for the comfort of those with varying views on the subject, I will not be allowing comments on this week and ask you not to try commenting about it elsewhere. I hope you understand and are okay with that.
The idea i wanted to explore, is that she is pagan (non mainstream religious) (although she later refers to herself as agnostic), and she lets Jay know that she recognizes that his arguments are Christian based. Since they are both religious based opinions, there is no middle ground for rational argument.
Which is kinda why it’s such a messy topic.

So much anger, so much cynicism. I have no answers.

My first (and one of few) attempts at parody in Bruno. Although I was more using it as a sort of story overlay. Anyhow, I rented the movie and everything, even using it as drawing reference for most of the backgrounds.
The paper reads: “Clinton, not using his brain” and “Newt (Gingrich) all policy, no heart.”
That’s Susan in the crystal ball saying “Bruno, Bruno, where are you? It’s susan, we’re trying to find you.” That, as well as Uncle Sam’s speech are direct quotes from the Wizard of OZ, with only the names changed.
Mumia Abu-Jamal, an American activist/journalist, was convicted and sentenced to death for killing a police officer. It is believed by many, and there is much evidence, showing that he is either innocent or was at least not shown due process.
Leonard Peltier, a Native American activist, was convisted and sentenced to two life imprisonments for shooting an FBI agent. Peltier is also considered by many to be innocent, with much evidence showing a lack of due process.
I wonder how many times I bemoan the lack of universal health care in Bruno? I should create a tag for that.
If Sarah Palin had made her mark before i started writing “Bruno”, I never would have been able to bring myself to use “you betcha.”
Is Susan being patronizing… not really. A tiny bit maybe. But I don’t care. I will always love Susan’s good natured personality.
My friend Cailin used to swim as soon as she could justify it, even when it was still far too cold. I always admired that. :)
Actually, I think it comes from “icicle” and not “suckle.” Ah well.
Notice it is “Deadalus” cooler, Deadalus being the father of icarus. Just being literarily silly there.
