This was inspired by a road-trip i took with my friends Rob and Trail back in 1989 I believe. The first leg was just Rob and I and we arrived at Trail’s house unexpectedly (by Trail) early, for a similarly interaction.
This is a theme which seemed to come up a lot, although I’m not sure if I can define it much better now than then. Happiness, suffering, inner, outer. Hrm.
Bruno’s memory seems to fail her a bit. But when life feels a continual emotional challenge, you have to find something good about it, why not repaint the past?
On rare occasion I’d do a strip like this: without Bruno in it. I generally tried not to, because she has a unique outlook on the world, and so everything is tainted by it, and I wanted to represent the feeling of that perspective. But now and again it felt important to remind people that what they’re reading is just that: a tainted perspective.
I drew this in 1997. That means no Google images. Which means I had to go to an actual library to find images to draw from. How far we’ve gone since then.
Bruno and Jay have a good, although perhaps unhealthy, friendship. Even Bruno isn’t foolish enough to take that further.
