I’ve read descriptions by a few cartoonists of the fact that they keep filing cabinets full of photo reference material for this purpose. The last such time I read about someone doing that was a few years ago, though – who knows if anyone still uses those files.
I believe those cabinets were collectively calles a “morgue”
I’ve heard “morgue” used to refer to the collection of copies of each newspaper kept in the basement of the publisher. I haven’t heard it used to refer to a collection of reference images, but anything’s possible. (Actually, no it’s not, but many things are, including this – as far as I know.)
I still have one, come to think of it…l
