There are certain freindships/relationships which are just doomed to be messy, and they’re sometimes the most precious in your life.
It’s easy to get caught up on your own reality and forget that other options are possible. I still do it, and break out, break out, break out…
Having a laptop really changed the game for me, especially since I made the switch to deriving all my income from my comics and freelance. On the flip side, every vacation is a bit of a work vacation. :)
I wrote this before traveling overseas in 2001. I think was me trying to express my fears about the idea.
Before I saw “Lion in Winter,” (an AMAZING movie with Peter O’Toole, Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins, and Timothy Dalton, among others) I witnessed two slightly drunk men, a history professor and an english professor, laughing uncontrollably as they tossed quotes from the movie of each other. I saw it as soon after as I was able, and still remember the mirth in their voices and tried to capture if here.
I admit, it is easy to be dismissive of death until you’ve experienced. I didn’t experience it until later in life, so I got to really witness that.
The silence of extended alone-time can be really intense, especially the contrast when you suddenly try to talk or you hear someone else talk.
