It’s slightly undercut by the fact that I, at least, have no idea what job he USED to have. I’m certain it was more “upper-class” than meat packer, but still.
Of course, there’s nothing “wrong” with being a meat packer. It’s not a job I’d ever in any way want, but SOMEBODY has to do it (we’re not likely to become an all-vegetarian society any time soon). I’m sure the world sum total supply of optimists and chipper sorts includes at least a few of them.
Rightly or wrongly, it tends to be considered more of a “it’s this or my family starves” job, though. Dadno is presumably supporting no one but himself, so lower-paying yet “better” jobs might also be open to him. At least back then, but obviously the job market’s a lot different now.
