I have great sympathy for those who shoot themselves in the foot even when they see themselves doing it. What happens inside all of us is complex.

I can sympathize, to a point. A lot of people do it over and over because they never understand what’s happening to them, never can unravel their own ends. But we’re supposed to be the intellectual giants of this planet. If we can’t figure out what makes us shoot ourselves in the foot, perhaps we need the infection, gangrene and death to improve the overall biota. Once is tragedy, twice is a lesson, third time it’s obsession and after that it’s a way of life. We really need to be better at this.
