Oddly, Thanksgiving is my favorite of the major holidays mainly because it’s largely non-commercialized. Relatively. Although that is changing.

Kind of a downer to say this, but IMHO the whole “illegal immigrant” analogy is a false starter. AFAIK the pre-Columbian Native Americans didn’t HAVE any laws against immigration so AFAIK the Pilgrims by definition could not have been ILLEGAL immigrants. You can’t break a law that’s not there.
Me saying that does NOT constitute being anti-immigration OR soft-pedaling what European colonists did to the Native Americans. I’m just sayin’.
The point is kind of more that we’re against immigrants, but we are immigrants. Like being invited in for dinner and then taking it on yourself to turn down the next guest who arrives.
Anyhow, more and more a moot point as people find they can do better in their own country than our flagging economy.
Sigh.
Actually, Chris, as the world recession deepens, the US is relatively better off. Brazilians are still remitting money to their relatives here, but we still have immigrants from places where work is scarce and the poverty at levels Americans can’t conceive. Or, as one Haitian immigrant put it, “You people think people with REFRIGERATORS are poor!”
