   We often recoil at our own reflection. Seeing ourself standing there instead of here generates shock and revulsion before recognition. It’s simply the nature of consciousness.

   Hey, he invited her to stay with him for a month and took her on an overnight hike. Unless I missed it, she never indicated her unwillingness to at least sleep with him. He’s rickrolling her, and I’d call foul too.

   I think it was a test, overall. Dan’s wanting attachments he won’t allow himself to even *try* making work. It’s a masochistic desire to show the worst of himself to Bruno before any potential “best” can come out.

   But Dan ought to know (after this much avoidance) that it’s ultimately self-defeating to show the worst of yourself *first* to a potential lover. He’s being very honest with Bruno, true, but that honesty could easily make for a self-fullfilling prophecy that means Dan has no reason to grow beyond his fears or self-sabotage.
