   Well, you have to take the tenor of the times into account. Not many other options would’ve occurred to someone in 19th century Europe, no matter how brilliant.

   Kind of like how, even when inventing the supposedly near-perfect society of Houyhnhnmland, Jonathan Swift took it for granted that the Houyhnhnms would have a class system; as a British guy in the 18th century, he simply couldn’t conceive of any society, however utopian, not having one.
