“Enemies” isn’t quite it. But someone who pushes and challenges you, in a way that makes you laugh. I think that’s a good thing. Still do.

I was never tied to a place or to things; I was always ready to go off and be a gypsy. It was the women in my life whose identity was in the three bedroom, two bath and built-ins. When we moved, they hauled every damned thing we’d ever owned with them, and the things increased exponentially with each passing year. They constantly demanded that I pass tests of my loyalty and faithfulness to them, but if I had ever challenged them to give up one precious material object for me, I know which end of the stick I’d be holding.
