   I’d have thought the difference was that unlike other jerks, Paul was someone she considered a friend.

   Yeah, I think Ronald is on the right track. She did think of Paul as a friend, which is what made his remarks so hurtful. But he obviously didn’t care about her at all, so she is going to have to sear off that part of her heart and never let him near it again. Absolutely the hardest thing to do, I know. I know.
