This was my sentiment visiting the Winchester Mansion. I mean, I wasn’t surprised, but it still didn’t keep me from hoping for more.

Was it really that bad, Chris? I’ve wanted to go there forever, ever since I saw Rose Red and Diary of Ellen Rimbauer. (So for about 10 years, then, but that feels like forever.)
I was a docent at a historic mansion once. It was kind of fun, and the people weren’t “herded”, although there was a kind of natural progression that most people followed through the building. Most of the furnishings and artifacts were “period”, not the owner’s original things. I don’t think they charged a fee, although there was a rather pointed “donation” box at the door. Even with all volunteers, some things cost money to keep those places open to the public. Haven’t been to Winchester, though I get what people mean about the commercialism. Kind of spoils the mood, I’m sure.
