So… years later, I was on a sailboat in Washington. It was owned by a friend of a friend. And I was talking with the boat owner, and come to find out he was a psychiatrist FROM the Northampton area. And i said something like, “ah, wasn’t it horrible what they did about the hospital, etc etc.” Come to find out, he was the man who made the DECISION to shut it down. Oops! Awkward!
Ahhhh…. small world. :)
Downright claustrophobic sometimes. See what I did there?
hahahah! :)
The closed hospital has since been torn down (about 5 years or so ago), and a bunch of new homes and one big business put up on the land. And the area was renamed “Village Hill”, instead of “Hospital Hill”. A lot of people wanted to at least preserve the historic building and put it to a new use, but the process of deciding on the demolition proceeded without much opportunity for the public to weigh in.
Sigh. Well, who knows, perhaps burying that past is for the best. :(
