Ah, modern American love!
Actually, those issues seem neither modern nor particularly American. We evolved with conflicting drives — self vs. clan/species, the need to spread genes far and wide vs. nurturing the young through that long childhood, and on and on. And I don’t think it’s male/female — we’re all conflicted.
Since we developed these big brains (the jury is still out on whether that will be an evolutionary advantage in the long run), it’s just intensified.
It would be interesting to see if those who are “happily” polyamorous are neurologically different from most folks in some way.
