I interpret the dialogue here to mean that Eloise got AIDS from an adulterous lover. If so, well, I think many people’s reaction would be kudos to Andrew for getting past that (and past the fact that he himself could easily have gotten AIDS from Eloise as a result), but I understand Simone’s need to blame Andrew for her sister engaging in the behavior that resulted in her illness.
Because, seriously, IMHO there’s never really any excuse for adultery. That certainly doesn’t mean Simone “deserved” to get AIDS, no one deserves that, but still…
We are story-based animals. We want to find narrative threads, causation and consequence, and won’t stop until we do. But once you get into the skeins of who needed what from who, and who didn’t acknowledge whatever from whoever, you find no certainty in blame and no untarnished place to stand. Point your finger at spots as you must; your finger is not clean, nor will it ever be.
