Ah. Now I understand.
That morning I was working for a large construction firm, when I suddenly noticed that all the phones had stopped ringing. The screen in the darkened conference room showed the burning towers. The halls were full of shocked and silent engineers. Their professional lives were about saving the lives of others in building disaster, in fire. They knew better than anyone else what was going on. Walking among them that day was walking through a wall of broken glass. And yet they walked on. They couldn’t sit. Why work? Designing and building more buildings?
