   Another possible reply to that question is, “Cruddy [or whatever negative adjective suits you best], but your interest is appreciated.” OSLT.

   I say “average”, or in spanish: “promedio”. If questioned I’ll ad that i do vary plus or minus one standard deviation of the mean. It’s usually the most honest description, statistically speaking.

   Some days I eschew small talk for big talk, and I’ll respond with something like, “The worms of melancholy are eating holes in my soul. And you?”

   These days I might say, “Oh, mixed” or maybe “Some good, some bad. You know… life.” Or even just “Tired.” Reasonably honest, but short and sweet. ‘Cause yeah, most people don’t actually care, they are just following social conventions.
