“Elephant ears” was also the name I saw for these when growing up in Michigan, so it did manage to spread to some other parts of the country by the late ’70’s.
In Canada they’re “Beaver Tails”
I’m from NJ-outside-NYC, and elephant ears to me are big versions of what everyone else seems to call palmiers. They always seem to have them in the pastry case in diners.
I’ve always heard elephant ears to be the American for palmiers.
