I remember reading this comic 16 years ago. It’s deja vu all over again. You would think we had learned
Things are 100 times worse now, and hardly anybody’s protesting. I think we’re all just shocked insensate. We are living “The Lord of the Flies”, and nobody’s protesting. I’ll be in my bunker…
“Lord of the Flies” is apt. An adolescent culture devolves into open savagery, pig-worship and worse. Half a nation behaves as if Trump were the Second Coming, no matter how grotesque or transparent his prevarications, lies, and paranoid fantasies. And when George W. Bush comes out talking of the necessity of a free press and sounding like a man without a hand up his back, you KNOW the country has crossed a line into inchoate insane open savagery. With Rachel Maddow offered up as the pig’s head on a stick.
Tyrants require a steady flow of national crises, threats and enemies, foreign and domestic, to keep the populace in a constant state of unease to maintain and reinforce their power. This explains the continued campaign-style bluster, the nonsensical executive orders and self-defeating trade and immigration policies. They aren’t designed to make us safer, more productive or better off in any way; they’re designed to further entrench our commander-in-chief’s position in his moneyed fortress.
To which we can add the secret military build-up in Syria, principally Marine combat teams for now, but could soon include Regular Army units. Fighting to help keep Syria Russian. When this news breaks — not that it’s new now, no no no — we’ll find ourselves stuck but good to the tar baby of Middle East disintegration with no easy or cheap way out. Since the alternative will look like leaving Russia in control of the region. We haven’t begun to pay the true costs of amateur adventurism yet.
