For what it’s worth, I think it’s a good idea from time to time to have a therapeutic rant.
In Bruno’s case here, though, her concern with purity in expression is noble, but she’s expecting it to translate into the commercial world of film and TV, which produce nothing but prepacked prejudices and comfortable stereotypes for mass mutual regurgitation. Not to be confused with art of any kind, unless you have Joseph Heller’s sensibilities about what ‘art’ should or should not do. You don’t get originality there unless you pay through the nose for it. Psychically AND economically; George Lucas pays a hefty fine to the MPAA, I believe, for every movie he makes with a crawl instead of opening credits, as the industry has specified WILL APPEAR. And that’s just for the opening minute. This is INDUSTRIAL creative embalming.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently (thanks, Bruno). As an aspiring author/illustrator, I don’t know if it’s important that we strive to say something new. As they say, that’s impossible. However, different voices speak to people in different ways. Even if you’re not saying something new, you can be saying it in a way that will click for someone in a way that other works that have said the same thing never did (assuming they read/saw/heard the other works in the first place). Your work can be new for someone else even if your work isn’t new in the grand scheme of things. I think a creator should merely focus on saying what they want to say and doing so in the best way they possibly can. If they do their job, the creation is bound to speak to SOMEONE…hopefully.
