It’s an odd dichotomy. Having written a complete work, even if you haven’t published it, even without sending it in, you are an ‘author’ — and presumed to be on your way to being rich and famous, however slowly. Your reticence about claiming the title only feeds people’s respect and deference. Save for those who sniff that they, too, could be an ‘author’ if they only had time for it. It’s odd, to defend a title you aren’t sure even applies to yourself. A kind of obscure snobbery, that fits like a twenty year-old sportsjacket.
