   My experience has been that faking enthusiasm only works so far up the corporate ladder. At middle management and above you must, MUST, manifest passion in order to get things done and not get run over by the next climber behind you. It doesn’t have to be enthusiasm for the work, mind, or the product or service, or then the people; a great deal of advancement can be had through the simple desire to make a higher salary or to frighten the workers into new levels of productivity.

   It’s a point of pride with me that I once dated one of these people, whose disregard for people not her equal was terrifying, and broke her grip on the ladder before she started ruining lives a battalion at a time. She never faked her enthusiasm; she genuinely enjoyed destroying people who didn’t meet her exacting standard. Hint to the unwary: When your date publicly dresses-down waiters for poor service, you are in the presence of a monster. Plan your escape and cover your tracks; you might be on the hit list.
