I presume “where to go next” is meant metaphorically. If she stays at Stanley’s house, she’s not going anywhere, and if she goes back home…or is she a nomad again and that didn’t register on me?
Aside from the fact that being liked by Katalin doesn’t strike me as much of a prize for the work Bruno would have to do to earn it, I don’t see the advantage to KATALIN if Bruno stays. After all, she evidently DOES like Agatha and she not only doesn’t like Bruno but probably feels guilty about that because Stanley cares about Bruno so much and the guilt just makes her angrier and the guilt is Bruno’s “fault” so Katalin dislikes her even more and feels even guiltier about that and gets even angrier about THAT and…
I’d think Bruno’s departure would take some of the stress off of Katalin. But what do I know.
If you have a single parent, you have next to no say in who that parent chooses to love or how.
If media has taught me anything, that’s not supposed to be easy for the child to adapt to. The child was used to having all the love, all the family, being the only one that was *that* special. Being an adoptee probably increases the child’s (irrational) fear of abandonment even moreso. Now that Stanley’s gone and she’s dependent on Bruno, it’s probably making Katalin have to deal with those feelings.
Bruno does this because *Stanley* loves Katalin. Bruno has to give herself a chance to learn to care about Katalin as well, even if Katalin won’t let her get close.
It’s a double burden to both care for a child because, well, she’s a child, and all children deserve to be cherished. It helps them grow up whole. But it becomes a new load when you’re obligated by fate and circumstance to care for her; on top of being resented, you’re now trapped in loco parentis. And in Bruno’s case, she’s triply damned because she wants to be likable enough for Katalin, who’s having none of it, and this is killing Bruno. No place to run to, no place to hide. You have to stand there and take it, and defend and protect, nurture and support this sullen, ungrateful wretch. Who won’t open up about how Stanley’s remote troubles bother HER.
“No place to run to, no place to hide.”
Except to just, y’know, GO HOME.
But everyone has their own sets of priorities.
ronald, you seem to think Katalin, being a difficult person in this situation, doesn’t deserve to have anybody on her side just because she’s being difficult. I don’t agree.
Katalin’s a lot like Bruno at her worst when she was younger, actually. Heck, Bruno was even worse: drinking unhealthily, driving her girlfriend away, yelling and ranting about how the world is horrible to unwilling listeners.

Katalin’s missing Stanley and irrationally hating Bruno even more for it are a walk in the park in comparison. Bruno hasn’t forgotten what it’s like to be separated from the one she loves most and becoming lost without them.
People sometimes want to help each other, even when the other person is at their worst, right?
I wouldn’t care to argue there was no duty to care for Katalin in any court. Too easy to get a summary judgment you don’t like and can’t afford.
Who’d file the charges? Stanley? Stanley TOLD her she could leave if she wanted to because AGATHA is there to take care of Katalin.
Having a direct escape from staying with someone who hates you yet choosing to do it anyway (instead of going home where there are people who instead love you) is IMHO not healthy behavior. No one cares what I think, but that’s what I think.
