I don’t know precisely what sort of expenses are involved in adoption, but I’m wondering if whatever agency allowed Stanley to adopt Katalin gave him a VERY good deal just to get her out of France. I mean, sure, there’s the stereotype of the French being rude, but there are LIMITS…
ADDENDUM: And wouldn’t sending Katalin to stay with Agatha allow Bruno to get the heck out of metaphorical Dodge? Or am I wrong in thinking that she’s visiting and she has in fact relocated?
Katalin isn’t French. She’s Roma/Hungarian. Stanley adopted her in Budapest.
Katalin’s not unsympathetic. Her adoptive father is in jail overseas, her house burned down, and now she’s in the care of someone she despises. It’s Bruno’s unfortunate position to be the adult in all this.
Also, yeah, the comic says that the main reason why Stanley could adopt her is because she was eleven and Roma, which made her hard to place. She probably had a difficult life before Stanley took her to the States. The two people she’s closest to, Amy and Stanley, have very complicated relationships with Bruno, and the first time they met, Bruno (inadvertently) insulted her. It’s not like she *doesn’t* have reason to be prickly to Bruno.
Katalin may be being a pill, but it’s not without reason. Stanley wouldn’t have wanted to adopt her if she was just a horrible child. It’s a shitty situation and she’s taking it all out on Bruno for superficial reasons. Hopefully she’kk cone around, but life isn’t that simple.
“Katalin isn’t French. She’s Roma/Hungarian. Stanley adopted her in Budapest.”
Oh, okay, sorry about that. Thanks.
Can any one point me to the strip hen Katalin first appears? There isn’t a tag for her. Thanks.
I can’t find a reference to Katalin before January 5th of this year. Either I’ve missed a phone call from Europe or some strips are missing, but she simply appears as Stanley’s adopted daughter after Bruno let herself into the house. Yet I’m sure there was at least a mention of her at some point. Somewhere. At some time.
Wait, how did Bruno accidentally insult her?
Me getting all of that wrong doesn’t change that Bruno could leave Katalin with Agatha and go home, though.
Bruno doesn’t know she’s in a comic strip; she doesn’t know that she’s being subjected to a “test of character” that she has no chance of escaping. The fact that she’s keeping herself in an unpleasant situation for no obvious reality-based reason just kind of confuses me, that’s all.
Katalin first came up when Bruno was travelling around Europe (and specifically when she meets Stanley in Budapest; that’s why he’s there).

Katalin despises Bruno: hxxp://brunostrip.com/wp/?p=6986
And I suspect Katalin would take “I don’t know how good your English is yet” as an insult.
Also, FWIW, Bruno thinks she has to befriend Katalin to reconnect with Stanley: hxxp://brunostrip.com/wp/?p=6984 Plus as someone who willingly puts herself in difficult situations, I don’t think she’d leave Katalin after Stanley put her in her care.
Thanks Nigel!
