Socrates said that the wise man puts no value on material things, and is ready to part with them when necessary. Basho, the poet, also had a perspective:

That said… nothing makes you more acutely aware of what things mean to us than a good-sized disaster. It’s hard to be grateful when you realize how much work you’re going to have to put in to have your creature comforts back again.
I’m 72 years old. I’m in the process of getting rid of everything. Family stuff is going to family now. Stuff I haven’t used in years is going to secondhand stores. Simplifying makes you free.
