Oh, indeed. I remembered this moment.
@Wood It is a sobering moment to realize what caregivers or friends silently sacrifice for your sake.
Not to knock Katalin too far, but maybe a lot of teenaged rebellion probably comes from a strong application of Hanlon’s razor: “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”. Maybe also replace “stupidity” with “ignorance”, though, they just don’t know what adult responsibility is like.
You can’t teach this to kids (or some adults) either, it just creates more of a will to rebel and resentment, they have to figure it out by themselves to feel any genuine appreciation for what’s being given to them.
That’s why I always remember Heinlein’s First Law in such instances: “Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.”
To which I add my own corollary: “Fools rush in where fools have gone before.”
