Lot of scarcely-concealed hostility, indeed unfocused rage, in old nursery rhymes. “Today’s the day we give babies away / With half a pound of tea…” The only thing that matches it is Puritan poetry about crying children: “But get away without delay, / Christ pities not your cries. / Depart to Hell where you may yell and roar enternally!” Courtesy of the Reverend Michael Wigglesworth’s ‘The Day of Doom.’ I’m amazed any of them reached adulthood at all.
