   It’s a truism that the guy who says your talents will be wasted wants your job for himself. Actually, that’s only for the first guy. The second might actually be motivated by concern that you’ll notice how badly he’s slacking off and wants you up the ladder as soon as possible. If you get a third one, chances are something’s wrong not just with the department but the whole corporate culture. Very difficult to effect change from the mailroom at that point. And going up the ladder might jeeeest a little fraught.

   It’s not very much like “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” at all. Bruno is going to have to learn the various rungs of the food chain here, without getting eaten in the process. The old poker advice about sizing up the players holds true here too: If you can’t spot the pigeon in five minutes, then YOU are the pigeon.
