Before the mad host of would-be ‘business gurus’ debased the term, this is what used to be called ‘team-building.’ It’s really little more than knowing what people do, how they feel about it, what they’d like to accomplish besides this, and letting them know they’re appreciated. Do not underestimate praise; a pat on the back is only a few vertebrae away from a kick in the rear, but light-years apart in helping people do their jobs.
The tricky part comes once you know your people and how they like to work. Some people struggle with their jobs; others sail through and wish they could do more. Some are just not going to be happy whatever you do, and will resent your attempting to become “pals” with them, as they see it. All must be treated fairly — which may NOT be equally! — and they must work together even if they have differences with each other. If you can find ways to make their differences help them work together, you will have discovered fire.
I worked at the University of California for 30 years, steadfastly refusing to supervise anyone except the occasional work-study student. I don’t mind that my stuff is my fault, but I hate it when other peoples’ stuff is my fault.
Leadership is like that. It’s hard to do no matter what level you’re at. It really takes a particular nature to do it well. A nature unfortunately more scarce than the need for it.
