Gina has already built the wall that keeps employees from taking up the space in her compassion reserved for her friends. Hard thing to do, and not pleasant, but there’s a reason you don’t go into business with your friends. The requirements for success for both are incompatible, and you cannot hope to bridge the gap. Not that you can’t be friendly with your workers, but you can’t expect to always be there for them. The business comes first or no one gets paid.
Note that family-run businesses have it worse in this regard (I’m not counting Wal Mart, the House Lancaster of commerce) but still must separate feelings from business. Without losing the connection or the capability. Unique social engineering situation, each and every one. But they find a balance or everything dissolves — family, business, feelings, the total shebang.
