You’d think the process of self-isolation would be more noticeable, at least to the one isolating her- or himself, but no. From the whispering girls in the hall to the refused volunteer position in junior high to the avoidance of team sports in high school to the dead-end job with co-workers who don’t make eye contact, it’s one long, uneven, slippery slope that becomes apparent only when you bang into a barrier others have passed with ease.
