I never did like the expression “your mama wears combat boots,” because growing up I was familiar with women wearing comfortable or practical clothing (as well as wearing what is considered more “feminine.”)
But for the most part, Bruno just doesn’t take insults without dishing ‘em right back.

This reminds me of many late night conversations I’ve had, where eventually the brain begins to slide.
The “Santa Turned Viking” was a short-lived comic book idea I had, starring Santa Claus, Nick Nolte, and the Pope — all of them giving up their jobs to loot and pillage. The bumper sticker says “Vote Zappa.”
Back when I was attending UMass, a Christian group paid for a many-page full-color “anti-abortion” insert to be included with the school newspaper. I’m pro-choice, and decided to run a counter-opinion week in my strip, and so I researched details, and here it is.
I think the newspaper received so much criticism for running the “anti” insert (they stated flatly that they needed money, and didn’t take sides), that they were happy to print a my comic as a counter-opinion.
Of course I had to start an uncomfortable topic with an uncomfortable aspect of it, that many people feel a man should be part of the choice — and clearly Bruno does not.
This week also cemented in Susan as a good friend of Bruno.

I think Bruno’s mom is pretty awesome here. She’s clear, and tells Bruno that she disagrees, but then still expresses her love and acceptance.
Bruno, is mixed here. She’s open with her mom about the abortion, but not about her dropping out of school. Maybe it was one thing too much for her sanity this week.

The idea i wanted to explore, is that she is pagan (non mainstream religious) (although she later refers to herself as agnostic), and she lets Jay know that she recognizes that his arguments are Christian based. Since they are both religious based opinions, there is no middle ground for rational argument.
Which is kinda why it’s such a messy topic.

Maybe that’s why Bruno remains friends with Jay. She just did something he highly disagrees with, but he can step back and see that the action has already been taken, and so he asks her how she’s doing.
At the end of the day, they can disagree, but they can still care about each other.

It’s funny to think that I felt the news was too much propaganda back in 1996, I fear it perhaps has gotten considerably worse.
Part of this strip was about the fact that I pretty much gave up watching television around 1990, and have never looked back. Of course, there are some excellent programs and excellent writing, but i get too consumed by it.
He is a bit cartoonier than the usual muscled guy I drew in Bruno.
I like this strip because she realizes, after her reflexive response, that she’s overreacting. I also like that he’s a tad bit snarky, but not a total jerk back, which he could have been.
