Again, I like a couple who can banter their way through a difficult moment instead of settling into glacial silence and estrangement. Does that really happen for anybody?
Actually, I find they bicker themselves into deeper and more unknown states of alienation. Edward Albee got the tone right in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” For some couples, greater intimacy only means access to a larger number of vulnerable targets. For some unlucky few pairs, that includes themselves. Truly horrific internal butchery then follows. Wholly inexplicable.
