Yikes, when I saw “the book’s off”, I initially interpreted that as “cancelled”…took me a moment to understand it as “sent”, which might have been better phrasing. Her lack of panic kind of helped me reach the right conclusion…
Writing and publishing a book, for the author, reflects the stages of grief: Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. These stages intrude at all stages from completion of the MS to mailing, acceptance, editorial changes, proofing, and finally publication. You really are sending your child into the void, beyond the reach of your ability to change that one little scene just a little bit… Very wringing and weird progression, actually.
