   Gertrude was right. When troubles come, they come not as single spies, but as entire battalions. Ready the fallout shelter; it could get dusty in a bit.

   I was about to ask why the defendee wasn’t speaking up and clarifying this, and then I imagined the scenario….domestic violence, where the aggressor either has either dictated this story to the beaten-down half, under threat of further beatings, or the defendee seized on this as a survival tactic to improve his/her lot with the aggressor.

   There’s also the issue of on whose side was the audience — and the favoritism shown a local, even if a known bully and mean drunk, against the outsider.
