I certainly understand them being upset, but the phone voice said it would take a month or so to iron out things from >>a legal perspective<< (paperwork, paperwork) but described Stanley's condition as "a few broken bones although otherwise fine," implying that he'd be as good as used-to-new after enough recuperation time — might even be allowed to leave before every last bit of paperwork is complete — so there's little if any reason for them to be "terrified that he won't be okay," little if any reason for them to doubt that "everything will be fine." Did I err here?
At the moment, Stan is being accused of an act he didn’t commit; there’s no saying* what combination of witness error or lying came up with the accusation, nor whether it will be straightened out in court. It’s possible that Stan may be found guilty regardless of his innocence.
We are also taking the word of the voice on the phone that he’s actually innocent.
* Of course there is; this is a work of art, and the artist may conclude the story however he wants. Not to mention that he actually already has, because this is a reprint. :) But from the reader’s perspective at this point in the story, we only know he’s in jail and has been wrongfully accused.
