So for a change Bruno’s the insensitive one. Hope Martin changes shirts before he leaves.
It was obvious from their first appearance http://brunostrip.com/wp/?p=2323 that Agatha and Bernard weren’t aware that Martin considered his drinking to be a PROBLEM. They seemed to consider it a character trait. After all, it is possible to enjoy drinking without actually being an alcoholic. Of course, I can’t even stand the SMELL of alcohol, so what do I know about it?.
On another note, wait, they’re in New York State? On the other side of the country from Seattle? Bruno literally hitchhiked across the country?
Or did she take the bus and I’m remembering a different storyline entirely?
Also, isn’t this supposed to be the middle-of-nowhere town that Bruno felt trapped in? Driving distance from Albany hardly sounds like the middle-of-nowhere to me. Then again, maybe I got that wrong, too.
It would be nice if artist commentary made a comeback. :-)
Interventions are neither easy nor particularly welcome. And Martin “I Am The Conqueror of Punch-Bowls” appeared to have made peace with his condition. For him to blame others now for his lack of intestinal fortitude, not to mention his slovenly habits, is a passive-aggressive insult of the worst order. No pity for him. He dug this grave himself, and to blame others for letting him do it is abdication of responsibility that I personally find monstrous. He’s not likely to change his ways, either, which means any further contact with him will only deepen his resentment and his misplaced sense of betrayal. Good riddance to him and his fermenting wardrobe; they both belong in vats of disinfectant.
If Martin had been a friend of mine, and uncorked that line on me, I would have calmly replied “You weren’t ready to be helped yet. You would have resisted any attempt to help. Now that you are ready, you’ll get that ride there and whatever other support I can give.”
Nice avatar, Rexhinalt. ;) Linux <3
Not sure what I'd do in this position, depends on how serious a person is about wanting help… and chemical dependence and withdrawal leads people down some pretty dark roads… Because the main motivation of most people is "not feeling bad", it's easy to go back and forth for a while when trying to recover from addiction.
The real question is who's willing to go with you for all the pitfalls. Not a lot of people are willing (and not many maybe should be). It's one thing to help a friend, another thing to be pulled down with them without either party meaning for it to happen.
