The best leadership I ever heard of was a captain of a sailing ship who never gave an order. He just made observations. “Looks like rough weather ahead,” he’d say, and the men ran up the ratlines to reef the sails and just leave the small topgallant sails in place to give headway. “Wind’s picking up,” he’d say, and the deck crew would put out full sails and swing out the staysails at the end of the yardams, the better to catch the wind and speed their ship. Hard to accomplish — you not only must command respect, but your crew or team have to do what to do in each situation with minimal guidance. Never managed it myself. But God, how I wish I did.
