I notice that Dije hasn’t suggested that Bruno might hang around with him and HIS friends (I mean, they had friends in common before, why not again?). Maybe he doesn’t want her to find out what he’s been telling them about His Crazy Friend Bruno from Portland…
Of course, in any large city, there’s generally a sizeable GLBT community and inasmuch as Bruno’s a B, she’d have a point of entry there even without Dije.
In fact, paradoxically — and at the risk of over-generalizing — that’s an advantage that GLBTs have over heterosexuals: In many new environments, pre-existing yet solid communities that are already predisposed to accept them are waiting for them. Being persecuted and isolated brought them together as united fronts.
I suppose that the same is true with some religious, racial, and ethnic groups, but not every large community is guaranteed a pre-existing population of members of this or that “type.”
As indicated, I’m at risk of over-generalizing with these statements. If I misspoke on any level (I strive for political correctness, which I perceive as just another term for “civilty”), I sincerely apologize. I’m not one to make an effort to get people to dislike me.
That’s correct, ronald. (No worries, you were not rude imho. :)
But being a “B” myself, I can tell you that sometimes we’re not as welcome in “the community”, at least IME. Bs can be discriminated against because we’re neither one nor another, can “pass” for straight, and at the worst considered a conduit of STIs between groups.
No reason for Bruno not to try, all the same. Just because someone’s gay doesn’t mean all their friends have to be, too. If it’s an LGBTQ group, there are insular, drama-filled communities and also friendly ones, just the same as any other kind of group.
Now Bruno’s talking nonsense, trying to find an excuse for why she’s friendless in a new place. She is openly refusing to consider that her pickiness, more toward herself than to others, and her wanting to adhere to a higher standard of togetherness than she’s capable of sustaining within herself is the real obstacle here. Sometimes I just want to take her by the shoulders and shake her. LOOK, kid….!
I doubt Dije is too worried about Bruno hearing what he says about her when she’s not around, since he’s not exactly shy about saying the exact same things to her face.
Illirium:
I actually knew that about bisexuals and [some of] the GLBT community but didn’t take it into account. Sorry about that. :-|
Bruno continues to cling to the idea that having friends will help solve what she perceives as her problems. She makes friends almost everywhere she goes and she STILL has those problems. Maybe her mission statement for life could use a second draft…
On a separate note, did she get a job in Olympia* and I’ve forgotten about that too? Some plot developments stick with me more than others.
===
*”~Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympia above the –~”
Oh, wait, I’m thinking of something else.
Of course, inasmuch as she’s both well-read and film-literate, Bruno would probably at least enjoy attending bookstore events, film festivals, et cetera and she might make some friends there besides. As I noted, she makes friends almost everywhere she goes.
(I’m sure that more than enough looks at Bruno’s favorite reading material and films have been presented over the strip’s history to form some sort of a “profile” of Bruno’s literary and film tastes but it would require someone to have kept track of them far better than I have.)
No problems, ronald. :)
